Modelling and Learning for Dynamical Systems, TSRT92

Course Information HT, 2021


The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the methods and principles used in constructing mathematical models in dynamical systems and in practical applications.

The course will cover model design based on basic physical principles as well as system identification, i.e., modeling based on measured data from sensors. It will also show how to use simulations for investigating the properties of a model.

Course content:

  • General introduction to models and model building: Model types, dimension and scaling, model simplification.
  • System identification: Estimating transient response, spectral estimation, identification of parametric models, identification of nonlinear models, validation.
  • Physical Modeling: Physical principles, object-oriented modeling.
  • Simulations: Choice of methods, stability, accuracy.

Lecturer and examinator:

Online office hours: Thursdays, 13:00-14:00, until October 28, on Zoom . Questions regarding the course are answered during office hours and not via E-mail, except for question which can be answered with yes or no.

Teaching assistants:

Office hours: Fridays, 14:15-15:00, in the A corridor, ground floor, between entrance 25 and 27 (English). Office hours: Mondays, 09:15-10:00, in the A corridor, ground floor, between entrance 25 and 27 (Swedish).


All the lectures will be held on Zoom . Exercise sessions 1-3, 5 and 7 be on Zoom (swedish, english); Computer exercise sessions (marked with D) and the labs will be on campus.
